Speakership Tussle Threatens Delta Assembly, PDP

A FRESH crisis is likely to rock the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in Delta State and the State House of Assembly over who would emerge as the next Speaker of the Assembly.

Three contenders Hon Samuel Mariere, Dennis Omovie and Monday Igbuya are said to be gunning for the position even as and Governor-Elect, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa and the past governors of the state are said to favour different candidates.

Hon Igbuya, from Sapele Constituency, presently the Majority Leader of the House is said to be favoured by the past governors as the next Speaker.

According t reliable sources, Igbuya, three-time legislator is not leaving anything to chance on becoming the next Speaker. He is said to have told some close associates that he had paid his dues in PDP and that he was determined to checkmate the incoming government of Okowa.

While PDP in the state and the Okowa are said to be considering Mariere, a lawyer, from Ughelli North 1 is said to be enjoying the support of the Governor Elect because of his intelligent and constructive contribution to debates.

He is enjoying his second term in the House and that has placed him in a vantage position to be qualifies as the Speaker. He was said to have worked for Hon Victor Ochei before declaring his support for Okowa.

Omovie an Urhobo man is representing Warri South Constituency at the House. He is enjoying his fourth term in the House but he has to contend with the area he is representing which falls to Delta South when the position has been zoned to Delta Central. He started with Obuh too before the pitched tent with Okowa.
