Development Agenda for Western Nigeria (DAWN) Commission and Agro-Nigeria have concluded plans to organize a southwest agricultural summit (SWAS), the first of its kind tagged; ‘Achieving an Agro-Powered Regional Economy’.

Executive Officer of AgroNigeria, Mr. Richard-Mark Mbaram, while addressing newsmen in Lagos, said DAWN and his organisation was working on a platform to complement the respective states government’s efforts to make the Southwest the most developed industrial region.

He said the summit, which is slated for October is being convened by AgroNigeria in partnership with the DAWN Commission, Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Nigerian Export Import Bank (NEXIM), Nigerian Incentive-Based Risk Sharing System for Agricultural Lending (NIRSAL), Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) and the Nigerian Investment Promotion Council (NIPC).

Speaking further, he said the summit will facilitate discussion and commitment from both private and public sector players in the agricultural sector towards accelerating agro-industrialization while also focusing on unlocking private investment into the sector.

He said what the country really needs is the agriculture practice done at the sub-national level, adding that agriculture is the tool to bail the country out of the current economic recession.

He said all hands must be on deck to build an industrial structure that is competitive; environment-friendly and capable of significantly improving the living standards of the people.

The vision of the Southwest region, according to Mbaram was to transform the zone from being a producer of primary goods into a producer of processed value-added good.
