Lagos – Some members of the U-23 team at the Rio Olympics football tournament will be drafted to the Super Eagles for the 2018 World Cup qualifying tournament.
This was disclosed by the President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Amaju Pinnick on Tuesday.
Pinnick, who made this disclosure against the backdrop of the U-23 qualification for the quarterfinal of the Rio Olympics with a game to spare, said that most of the players have distinguished themselves and would likely be drafted to the Super Eagles during the 2018 World Cup qualifiers.
He said that the Olympic Games football tournament remains a developmental programme for the Super Eagles, hence the NFF’s insistence on merit when Coach Samson Siasia was selecting his players.
“The boys have really done well given the circumstances that surrounded their preparations and travel.
“We are impressed with their performance and I assure you that so many of them will be fully involved in the World Cup qualifiers.
“That was the reason why we challenged anybody that said the coach was being bribed to select players out of merit to come out with a proof because he never did that.
“We know that every age group competitions are developmental and we have always insisted on merit. This includes the U-23. They’re the future of the national team,” he said.
