Sokoto spent N231m on flood control, says commissioner

Sokoto State Commissioner for Environment, Dr Jabbi Kilgori, has disclosed that the state government had spent N231.43 million on the construction of drains and flood control in different parts of the state.

Kilgori told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Sokoto that the state government was committed towards preventing flooding within and outside the metropolis.

He said new drains were constructed and old ones expanded at Dogon Daji, Sanyinna in Tambuwal Local Government Area, GSS Tangaza, headquarters of Tangaza Local Government area.

Others are in Wajake, Wamakko Local Government and Gagi, Mabera, Bello Way, Emir Yahaya, Kanwuri and Gwiwa low cost housing areas in Sokoto South and Sokoto North Local Government areas within the metropolis.

He said new drains were also constructed in Dange-Shuni, headquarters of Dange-shuni Local Government and Rikida and Kilgore in Yabo Local Government areas respectively.

He explained that the gesture was aimed at preventing flooding during the rainy season in the areas.

The commissioner called on the residents of the state to desist from indiscriminate dumping of refuse in water ways.

He stressed the need for residents to dump wastes only in designated areas created by the government for easy evacuation.

Kilgori said the ministry had taken measures to ensure the evacuation of refuse dumps in all water ways across the state.
