President of the Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF), General Kenneth Minimah, has linked underdevelopment in boxing in the country to short camping exercise for boxers.

Minimah said camping for boxers for major events should be a continuous thing, stressing that lack of such has been the bane of the sport’s development in the country.

Speaking to Daily Independent during the commissioning of the 30-apartment two-storey boxing hostel at the National Stadium in Lagos on Saturday, the former Chief of Army Staff said he is ready to take Nigerian boxing to the next level, assuring that Nigeria will perform well in the next Commonwealth and Olympic Games.

“As long as I am concerned, the problem with some Nigerian boxers not performing well boils down to short camping and preparation period.

“You can remember that boxing used to be the Nigeria’s mainstream sport, but we are struggling in that area because of inadequate camping period and preparation.

“All these things I will make sure we correct so that our boxing can move forward. During the next Olympic Games and Commonwealth Games, we are going to make sure our boxers prepare adequately,” he said.

The army chief highlighted some of the reasons for poor camping for Nigerian athletes to include high cost of accommodation and other logistics, saying such challenges prompted the building of the hostel.

“You know camping costs so much. You can think of hostel for the athletes; this is not to mention other logistics like transport and feeding.

“It was in consideration of all these challenges that we decided to come up with this hostel project. At least our boxers will have a place to call their own; a place where they will train adequately ahead of major competitions.”

The newly commissioned hostel was built by the Nigerian Army Engineering Corps to cater for the camping and training of boxers for major events. It was commissioned last Saturday by the then Chief of Army Staff, General Kenneth Minimah.
