Lagos – Xherdan Shaqiri a Switzerland has said that he is not disappointed after losing the best “Goal of the Tournament” to Zoltan Gera of Hungary in the concluded Euro 2016 which held in France.

“I’m not disappointed that my goal was not elected. But everyone knows that my goal was the most beautiful!” Shaqiri told Blick.

The Stoke City midfielder scored a stunning overhead kick during the tournament, but it was beaten in a fan vote by the Hungary midfielder’s effort against Portugal in the group stage

Shaqiri believed that a mass vote from the Hungary fans may have influenced the decision to award the Euro 2016 Goal of the Tournament to Zoltan Gera.

The midfielder appeared set to win the fan-nominated award with his stunning overhead kick against Poland, but Gera clinched the prize with his strike against Portugal.

Ironically, UEFA’s technical observers have ranked Shaqiri’s goal as the best in the tournament, beating Hal Robson-Kanu’s individual effort against Belgium, hence the Switzerland international insists his was the best.

It is against this background that the official twitter account of Switzerland’s national team also jokingly mocked UEFA for its decision to let the fans decide.

However, in reply to the announcement that Gera had won, they wrote: “Some things should be just better not vote.”
