Traders at Onitsha International Electronic market counted heavy losses following several hours of heavy downpour that lasted from Thursday to early hours of Friday.

The President of the market Mr. Izuchukwu Okoye estimated that the traders lost over N800million worth of goods to the flood which submerged over 1,500 lock-up shops.

According to him, “the flood surged into the market when the volume of the flood could not be contained by the drainages along the Onitsha/Asaba expressway.

“Goods damaged were mainly from A and B lines and we appeal to the State Government to come to our rescue.”

The secretary of the market, Comrade Damian Ogudike said that the traders paid their taxes and levies to the State Government and therefore the state should look into their condition.

The drainages, according to him, are the problems and the expectation is that the state government should work on the drainages to elevate it to a higher level than they are now.

“You can see the traders insisting that the money they paid to the government should be refunded to them since their problems in the market are not being solved”, the secretary said.

The Public Relation Officer (PRO), Mr. Samuel Ikechukwu Onwuama said that Thursday to Friday’s rain was the third time such incident happened, adding that they lost over N600million worth of goods in the second incident.

A trader, Mr. Chukwudi Ochinanwata, said he lost over N200, 000 worth of goods to the flood. Also another trader, Mr. Dominic Okey Mba, said that he lost several millions of naira worth of goods and appealed to the state government to take urgent steps to control the flood.
