Senators Worried By Predicaments Of IDP – Ekweremadu

The National Assembly on Wednesday in Yola the Adamawa State capital restated its commitment to ensuring the stability of Nigeria as well as making necessary sacrifices and contributions to the unity of the country.

The Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu state this during his familiarization and assessment tour of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) at the NYSC and Malkohi camps all in Yola North Local Government Area of the State.

Senator Ekweremadu explained that the purpose of the visit to the IDPs camps across the North East will enable the senate see for themselves and evaluate the travails and tribulations faced by the displaced persons.

Ekweremadu who represented the senate president, Dr. Bukola Saraki noted that the Senate as an institution is highly disturbed by the predicaments of the north east adding that a problem in any part of Nigeria is a problem for all Nigerians which entail the visits to ensure that they present their findings before the senate.

The Deputy Senate President however added that, the senate will ensure that adequate funds are earmarked for the reconstruction of the damaged infrastructure, government institutions and public buildings destroyed as the insurgency lasted adding that the senate will ensure that effective oversight is carried out to ensure optimal utilization of the funds.

He called on the IDP’s not to despair by their plight in life even as he noted that he also faced similar adversity during the Nigerian civil war when the people of South East and South – South  were displaced for Three years as a result of the war that erupted between 1967 to 1970.

“We were displaced for three years as our markets, schools and villages were destroyed during the civil war. I feel the pains during the war. We shall not be like this forever.

That is why I am here.

“Like me, you will also triumph in life. Some of you will become successful businessmen and successful politicians in life,” he said.
