The Senate Tuesday summoned the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, to appear before its Committee On Judiciary And Human Rights to justify with concrete evidence of his allegations of forgery against top officials of the Senate.

The motion came under matters of urgent national importance after a closed door session that lasted ?for over two hours.

The motion enjoyed the support of the lawmakers present at the days plenary.

The lawmakers were appalled that the same rules of the Senate was used in the administration of its proceedings during the ministerial confirmation process which brought the Attorney-General to office as well as other top government officials.

Mr Ike Ekeremadu, Deputy Senate President, who read the resolution of the upper legislative chamber after the Senators gave their contributions, said he Attorney-General, Abubakar Malami, is to appear before the Senate Committee on Judiciary and Human Rights not later than Thursday.

The Senate said that the allegation by the executive is another attempt to overthrow the legislature, insisting that its rule is authentic and not forged.

Six senators spoke in “total support” of the motion, saying “it is time to defend democracy”.

The government accuses Messrs. Saraki and Ekweremadu of falsifying the Senate Rules used in electing Mr. Saraki as senate president in June 2015.

The controversial election took place against the wish of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, which Mr. Saraki belongs to.

The senators said Tuesday the Standing Rules used for the elections of their presiding officers were not forged.

Speaking after the motion had passed, Mr. Ekweremadu said, “those who are using their office to persecute others should remember no condition is permanent”.
