A new session begins in the basic education school category across the South-West geo-political zone today.

On Sunday, parents and guardians were seen in various markets making last minute purchases.

At the Balogun, Oshodi and Yaba book markets parents were seen haggling over prices which they complained were on the high side.

Sellers of bags and shoes were also not left out of the rush as parents also besieged shops where fairly used sandals, shoe and bags were sold.

A parent, Mr. Obinna Iloh, told Daily Independent that he had to settle for the fairly used bags and shoes owing to the high cost of brand new products, adding that the supposedly new bags he bought last term got torn before the end of the third term.

However, booksellers at the Sapon Book Market in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, complained of low sales and patronage.

A book seller, Mrs. Toun Ogunbona, accused owners of private schools and publishers of connivance which had robbed them of good patronage.

She said: “What publishers do is to sell directly to schools. This is not a fair practice, at all. We are not happy about the situation. Before private schools became a popular option to public schools we were trusted partners of the publishers.
