Scavenger Jailed Two Weeks Over Attempt To Stab Policeman

An Abuja Grade 1 Area Court has sentenced one Sabitu Bello to two weeks imprisonment for attempting to stab a police officer.

The accused, a 20-year-old scavenger, was, however, given an option of N5,000 fine by the judge, Mohammed Marafa.

Police prosecutor, Ephraim Lukas, had told the court that the complainant, Idowu Emmanuel, on June 8 reported at Kubwa Police Station of how the accused, on same date, pulled out a knife in his cloth with which he attempted to stab him and one Adekole John.

He said the act caused both of them fear of death and body injury.

When the charges were read to the accused, he pleaded guilty and was sentenced to two weeks imprisonment.

The accused was charged with criminal intimidation, offence contrary to section 397 of the Penal Code.

Similarly, one Ajibola Lawson was arraigned before the same court for allegedly inflicting injury on a police officer in Kubwa, Bwari Area Council of the FCT.

The susprct, of Phase 2, Site 2, however pleaded not guilty to the charges of causing grievous hurt and obstructing police officer from performing lawful duty, offences that contradict Sections 247 and 148 of the Penal Code.

Police prosecutor, Ehraim Lukas, told the court that the police officer, Boniface Adekole of the Nigeria Police Force attached to Kubwa Divisional Headquarters, complained that while he was on traffic duty along Bank PHB junction, a motorist violated traffic rule.

He said the accused, in the process of arresting the cyclist, assaulted him by inflicting injury on his nose and hit him with a stone, which caused him dislocation on his right hand, thereby obstructing him while performing his duty.
