Lagos – As the Group F matches at the Euro 2016 tournament continue today in France, Christiano Ronaldo has another opportunitry to rescue his country from imminent early exit as Portugal take on Austria in Paris.

Portugal is currently ranked number eight in the world by FIFA, while Austria is ranked 10th which  on paper gives them an edge to steal the show.

In spite of the impressive FIFA ranking, Portugal could only manage a 1-1 draw with 34th-ranked Iceland in their opening match, while Austria was beaten 2-0 by 30th-ranked Hungary after going down to 10 men.

Neither country has managed to win a European title although Portugal finished as runners up to Greece in 2004 when they hosted the event.

These two nations last met in Euro 1996 qualifying with the teams drawing 1-1 in Austria in October of 1995 and Portugal wining 1-0 at home in November of 1994.

Portugal is unbeaten in the past four meetings with a win and three draws. The sides have met 10 times in the past with Austria winning three, losing two and drawing five.

Austria’s last win was 2-1 in Portugal in 1979 and is their only victory in the last seven encounters, but the scores would be settled today as win would put either side on a good position to progress in the tournament.
