At least one Policeman and two others were among the victims killed yesterday by armed robbers in a broad day robbery operation along the busy Olu-Obasanjo Road in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.
It was gathered that the suspected armed robbers, numbering about four, trailed their victims from one of the new generation banks along the Olu-Obasanjo Road, where they opened fire on them and to also scare passers-by.
It was also gathered that the police personnel was the assailants’ main target, as they first opened fire, before killing the driver and their principal.
Sources who witnessed the dastardly incident narrated that the victims rode in a Toyota Thundra Jeep, adding that their escort was a mobile policeman.
The eyewitness stated that the four armed robbers drove a Toyota Camry car, but because of the busy traffic, they parked few metres away from the head-office of the  Rivers Transport Company (RTC) and trekked towards their targets.
He said policemen around the vicinity abandoned their duty posts and fled at the sound of gunshots thereby making the entire operation which lasted for few minutes an easy one for the robbers.
“They parked at the back because of traffic; they, then, trekked to where the Thundra car they attacked was. They killed the official, the policeman and the driver instantly. They then drove away because the traffic cleared and all the transporters scampered for safety.”
Another eyewitness stated that immediately after the incident, the police operatives came back and took their dead colleague and the dead car owner, leaving behind the driver, but returned later and picked the driver who was lying dead on the road.
There is fear in Port Harcourt now owing to the rising cases of robbery particularly in the state capital.
