Rivers State Government has ordered the state Waste Management Agency to intensify efforts at clearing canals and waterways across the state.

The measure it said was to check flooding across the state.

The state Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, gave the directive in Port Harcourt.

Already, blocked canals in Port Harcourt and other towns had been cleared by the State Waste Management Agency; and the measure has improved the flow of water and reduced cases of flooding.

The governor pointed out that the clearing of the canals would not only check flooding but also improve the health conditions of the people.

He advised the people of the state to always participate actively in the monthly environmental sanitation exercise in the state in addition to their daily environmental sanitation routine to keep the state neat.

The governor also expressed satisfaction with the progress made so far in the improvement of the sanitary condition of the state, bearing in mind the deplorable environmental condition he inherited on May 29, 2015 due to the failure of the immediate past administration to honour its financial obligations to environmental service providers.

He urged residents of the state to always cooperate with government officials and environmental workers as they work towards clearing the canals across the state.
