The first group stages of the women’s tournament take place on Wednesday with Sweden facing South Africa, while the men’s group stages start on Thursday, with Iraq playing Denmark.

Nigeria’s Super Falcons are missing in the Olympic women football events after they were eliminated by Equatorial Guinea. South Africa later eliminated Equatorial Guinea to book their train to the Rio Games, while Zimbabwe, the other African representatives, landed in Brazil at the expense of Favourites, Cameroon.

Today’s opener between Sweden and South Africa will kick-off at 10pm Nigerian time.

Despite the big kickoff today, the Rio Olympic Games will officially start on Friday after an expected elaborate opening ceremony by the host country, with inputs from other participating countries. Team Nigeria’s flag, according to official information released from their camp, will be borne by sprint star, Blessing Okagbare.
