Samson Siasia, Nigerian U-23 national team coach, finally met with Chelsea midfielder, John Mikel Obi, and Watford striker, Odion Ighalo in England at the weekend.

The coach had one-on-one discussion with the duo to know their availability or otherwise for the Olympic Games in Rio. Siasia has three slots for over-age players and the likes of Mikel and Ighalo are seen as possible choices to fill the quota in the Dream Team VI.

A source, who preferred not to be named, confirmed the meeting of the coach with the two players.

“Yes, Siasia has met with Mikel; he was at Stanford Bride for the Chelsea game against Leicester City.”  He thereafter met with the Watford striker and also ascertained his availability for the Games in Rio.

The coach, according to the source, is also expected to hold talks with Victor Moses, Kelechi Iheanacho and Alex Iwobi before returning to Nigeria as he looks towards building a formidable team that would challenge for gold in Rio.

Nigeria has been drawn in the same group with Sweden, Japan and Colombia at the men’s football event of the Summer Olympic Games.

Siasia led the country to a second-place finish at the Beijing 2008 Olympics; losing in the finals to a Lionel-Messi inspired side. This term, the coach is craving to go one step better to repeat the feat of the Atlanta’ 96 team, which 20 years ago beat the likes of Argentina and Brazil to the gold.
