ABUJA – Super Eagles captain, John Mikel Obi, has dismissed negative insinuations over the dollar gift by a Japanese business for winning Rio Olympics football bronze, saying there was nothing wrong with the gift.

The Nigeria Football Federation buffs have insinuated that the gift could open the part for unscrupulous matches fixing agents, denouncing the gift on the premise that it could have been tainted.

But Obi said on Friday in Abuja that he saw nothing wrong accepting a gift from anybody.

“I see nothing wrong with that, it was a gift, a cheque written in my name and the name of the coach.  It’s like you can give anybody a cheque, a gift.  I don’t see anything wrong with that.”

He, however, said that he respects people’s opinion on the issue just as he wished his opinion on the matter be respected, and explained that the money was yet to get to the recipients, saying that the cheque has yet to clear.

Amaju Pinnick had advanced reason of integrity as point why the federation kicked against acceptance of the gift but many Nigerians football fans sided the players’ action which they saw as a worthy reward for a team that was abandoned on its way to the Olympics in Brazil.
