Residents of Ojo, a suburb of Lagos State have appealed to Lagos State government to provide adequate security at St Michaels Primary School complex as street urchins popularly called ‘Area Boys’ have illegally converted the school into a party ground.

It was also reported that the urchins were also preventing government contractors from embarking on the perimeter fencing within the school premises.

The spokesman of the residents, Mr. Rafiu Ajayi, said that the area boys had defied every security measure put in place by the community and the school authority to protect the school from incursions of the area boys.

According to him, the most worrisome aspect of the nuisance constituted by the boys in the area was the heaps of wastes and rubbish that are left unclean.

He appealed to the State government to come to the aid of the school by fortifying the school buildings, adding that frequently wastes generated and left unclear is left for the pupils’ to clean before commencement of academic learning at the school.

Besides, Ajayi also disclosed that demands on contractor handling fencing project of the school is sometimes hindered and frustrated by the land speculators who demand N250,000 before commencement of work at the site.

A source who confirmed the development and spoke on the condition of anonymity disclosed that apart from the threat by area boys and land speculators there are other serious challenges hindering learning activities at the school.

He queried the rationale behind the demand for N5, 000 gratifications by school inspectors in the Ojo Local Government Area, contending that schools in the area need younger teachers
