The House of Representatives on Tuesday summoned Mr. Lawal Daura, Director-General of Department of State Service (DSS) to appear before it within 48 hours, to explain the rationale behind the raid of Ekiti House of Assembly complex in Ado-Ekiti on Friday.
The House took the decision after a resolution was passed following the motion under matters of urgent public importance, sponsored by Leo Ogor, the Minority Leader.
Shortly after the incident, the Speaker of the Ektit House of Assenbly claimed that four lawmakers hd been arrested and whisked to Abuja by the DSS.
Ogor (PDP-Delta)said, “It is a clear violation of the provisions of the constitution; it is unacceptable as it demonstrates interference of an arm of government.
“If somebody violates the law and nothing is done, it gives him the privilege to move forward.
“Therefore, it is important that we summon the Director-General of the DSS to explain where the agency derived its powers to invade and destabilize the activities of the House.
“It is important to respect the rule of law and the sanctity of this institution must remain sacrosanct,’’ Ogor said.
On his part, Saheed Fijabi (PDP-Oyo), argued that the unwarranted and unlawful invasion of Ekiti State House of Assembly was in breach of the provisions of Section 3 of the National Securities Act and Section 14(1) of the Legislative Houses Powers and Privileges Act.
While noting that democracy as a form of government is founded and thrives on the principles of separation of powers, Fijabi described DSS action as a clampdown on the age-long democratic principles of rule of law rather rule of men.
n his ruling Hon, Yakubu Dogara, the Speaker, referred the matter to Committee on Public Safety and Intelligence for further legislative action.
