Abuja –The House of Representatives on Thursday mandated its Committee on Emergency and Disaster Preparedness, Aids, Loans and Debt Management, Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and North East Development to investigate jointly the alleged diversion of donor funds meant for IDPs in the North East.

The resolution of the House followed a motion under matters of urgent public importance entitled, “Need for investigation into alleged diversion of donor funds meant for the rehabilitation of the North East and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs)” sponsored by Hon. Ali Isa.

The lawmaker while moving the motion on the floor of the House noted that a number of international communities and donor organisations have publicly declared monetary support for the rehabilitation of IDPs in the North East.

He said: “Both the Federal Government, local donor groups as well as wealthy individuals have committed funds for the same purpose,…worried that despite all the donations, a large number of these IDPs are living in hunger, very deplorable and un-hygienic conditions without any rehabilitation in sight.

“There are series of allegations of diversion of the donated funds meant for the well being and welfare of IDPs,” he said.

He also lamented that some civil society groups and non-governmental organisations claiming to be working for the interest of the IDPs are doing the contrary.

Also contributing to the motion, Hon. Johnson Agbonayima said the situation of the IDPs is disheartening and a disgrace to the nation, adding that corruption must be stopped in the country so that the North East could be rebuilt.

The House adopted the motion after Yakubu Dogara, the Speaker, put it to a voice vote.
