Lagos state branch of the Nigerian Red Cross Society on Sunday identified top ten the challenges militating against the humanitarian works of the society.

Mobolaji Onibudo, chairman of NRCS in Lagos mentioned the challenges as: inadequate funding, lack of financial and other supports from donor agencies, limited assistance from the Lagos state government, lack of functional ambulance and operational vehicle and lack of salary support for staff of the society.

He further explained that insufficient medical equipment and drugs for the community based clinic of the society, flooded premises of the branch headquarters each time there is rain and inadequate activities to engage and motivate the 800,000 youth volunteers, are other challenges.

The NRCS boss, who was speaking during the visit of Peter Maurer, president of the International Committee of the Red Cross, (ICRC) also urged the committee to support the activities of the branch in Lagos.

His words: “The only ambulance for the Red Cross Society in Lagos was donated 16 years ago by Bola Armed Tinubu, former governor of the state”.

Peter Maurer, the ICRC president in his response said that it has been observed by the committee that in parts of the world, government and donor agencies are politically motivated projects instead of humanitarian services as been carried the by Red Cross.

He however pleaded with the 800,000 Red Cross volunteers in Lagos not to be discouraged, saying that the humanitarian services they render are not paid in monetary or material forms.
