Former Super Eagles coach, Christian Chukwu, has commended the League Management Company (LMC) for instituting the highest goal scorers’ trophy in honour of legendary Nigeria striker, Rashidi Yekini, saying it would further help in the development of the league.

Chukwu, who is the Technical Consultant of Enugu Rangers, said on Tuesday that the award would add more credibility to the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) and also add value to the player’s profile.

“For once we are beginning to see activities that will make the NPFL more competitive.  In every season there is need for league players to be looking up to something like an award to crown their efforts.

“This is will also motivate the players to be more committed and work harder, because they know there is something at stake and it will makes the league to be tougher,” Chukwu said.

On naming the award after Yekini he said, “It is a good decision, because Rashidi is one of the best goal scorers that ever played for Nigeria. He started with the local league, went abroad and came back to Nigeria to end his career also with the local league which is a show of patriotism.”

The chairman of the LMC, Shehu Dikko, had told the press that the Rasheed Yekini trophy for the highest goal scorer was part of the NPFL Awards which the board approved at its meeting in June.

Also, that the decision to name the trophy after the famous striker was chosen by the board as away to immortalise the player who scored 37 goals in 58 appearances.

Dikko said the NPFL Awards was a long term project of the LMC open to corporate sponsors in both headline and other supporting categories for which some corporate firms are already holding talks with the LMC on their potential participation in the awards.
