Rangers International of Enugu are just 180 minutes away from winning their first Nigerian league title in 32 years. The team, which top the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) table with 57 points, will win the league if they win their next two games against relegated Ikorodu United, and at home to lowly El-Kanemi Warriors. In this interview with supersport.com, IMAMA AMAPAKABO, coach of Rangers, is confident that the team will end its 32 years of wait for a major trophy. Excerpts

What were the first things you felt you needed to change on your first day at work at Rangers this season?
A lot of things had to change but the most important was the mentality. It had to do with the mentality of the entire Rangers board, management, staff, technical crew, support staff and players. I think we have been able to get it right in this regard.
You lost your first game to Kano Pillars in Kano. What was responsible for the loss and how much the squad improved?
That game in Kano was a landmark because it was the first time my team was playing a grade A game. My Joy was that we created a lot of chances in that game that should give us victory but we didn’t take them and it also gave the players a lot of belief in my philosophy and approach to game.

Which game has been your most difficult this season?
I have been asked this question before. I will say all the games are important. Every victory is important to me and I treasure every point.

It seems you have some of the best fans in the country…just how important are these supporters and what was that one thing they did that shocked you the most?
Supporting us in the rain when we beat Sunshine Stars 2-0 on September 18. We brought them to the stands with good football that produce results and they paid us back with their support in all conditions.

Which club has surprised you the most in the league this season?
Ikorodu United, because we played them in the first round and I knew they were one of the best sides, tactically. I think they struggled because they did not manage their bad patch (earlier in the season) well.
The case of MFM was different. They are a good ball playing side without depth so I knew they would not last the distance.

Rangers’ penultimate match of the season is against relegated Ikorodu United. Three points in the bag eh?
(Laughs): It’s not going to be that easy. We played Ikorodu United earlier this season and I can tell you that they are one of the best sides we have played from tactical perspective. It will be a psychological battle, more than anything else. My players have to be focused. If we are, we will win.
Four teams- Rangers, Rivers United, Wikki Tourists and FC Ifeanyiubah (FCIU) are jostling for the league title.

In what order will these teams end the season?
Rangers will win the title. Rivers United will finish in second place, Wikki will be third while FCIU will end the season in fourth place.
