Enugu Rangers were at their ruthless selves in Enugu, overcoming fellow title contenders, Rivers United, 4-0 in one of the week 34 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) matches played across the country on Sunday.

The Flying Antelopes started the rout in the dying minutes of the first half after Tope Olusesi, who was later given a straight red card, scored in the 40th minute.

Godwin Aguda made it two in the 47th minute, just after the restart. The celebration that followed the second goal was halted by Olusesi’s red card in the 61th minute but that did not deter the former champions from pushing forward.

The red card, however, spurred the visitors to action and they threatened Rangers back line ceaselessly but it was the Enugu side that scored in the 84th minute through Chiamaka Madu, who fired from outside Rivers United box to give his side a three-goal lead.

Madu also provided the assist in Rangers’ fourth goal two minutes later, running across Rivers box and laying a pass to Obinna Madu, who finished the job for Rangers’ 4-0 score line.

The result catapulted the Flying Antelopes to the summit of the league table on 57 points with former champions, Wikki, dropping to the second spot on 54 points, albeit with a match on hand.

In the other results, already relegated Ikorodu United pulled one of the greatest upsets in the ongoing season after beaten relegation battlers, Heartland in Owerri. The goal was scored by Fatai Abdullahi in the 54th minute. The result has no effect on the visitors, but greatly knocked Heartland, who were already out of the drop, down one spot ahead of the dreaded zone.

In Makurdi, champions, Enyimba, lost 0-1 to home side, Lobi Stars. Kano Pillars defeated Sunshine Stars 2-0 in Kano, while Akwa United walloped Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM) 3-1 at the Nest of Champions in Uyo.

In Warri, Warri Wolves overcame Nasarawa United 1-0, while the match between Abia Warriors and IfeanyiUba scheduled to hold in Umuahia was postponed.
