Ramadan Forces Amir Khan To Train In Night

Because of strength, Amir Khan has been burning the midnight oil training due to the fact that he may finally get the call to fight Floyd Mayweather in Las Vegas on September 12.

Khan, a devout muslim, is currently observing the holy month of Ramadan by fasting from sunrise until sunset, which has precluded him from any boxing training during the day.

But the Bolton welterweight, still hopeful of landing the Mayweather fight in eight weeks, has found a way of staying sharp so he will be ready to face the pound-for-pound No 1 if he is chosen as his final opponent.

Ramadan has been an incredibly busy period for Khan who has embarked on a 15-city tour of Britain in order to raise vital finds for the Amir Khan Foundation, which is building an orphanage in Gambia.

However, the 28-year-old insists he has not taken his eye off the ball with the fight of his life potentially just two months away.

Khan said: “I go to the mosque after I open my fast – I have about five hours between fast open and fast close so I do a quick session. It doesn’t have to be too hard or too long because I don’t want to pull a muscle. I hit the gym at midnight for an hour or so. I’ll be ready.

“Ramadan has been busy because we have been all over the country raising money for the Amir Khan Foundation. We’re building an orphanage in Gambia for 100 kids so it puts things in perspective.”

It is not unusual for Mayweather to wait until the 11th hour to announce his opponent and Khan says he has not yet given up hope of landing a shot at the 38-year-old icon.

But the 2004 Olympic silver medalist has warned Mayweather that he will gain no advantage by keeping him waiting.

Khan added: “Maybe he’s making me wait and distracting me, making sure I am not focused on what my job is, so that I’m not in the gym and he’ll catch me off guard.

But that’s not going to happen. I’m always in the gym and I always keep myself fit. I don’t think that will affect me in any way.”
