PSG hopes for comeback against Barca

PSG face the Herculean task of beating Barcelona by at least three goals when the team takes on the Blaugrana at Camp Nou today.

Neymar struck in the first leg at Parc des Princes before Luis Suarez added a spectacular double, giving Barca a strong away-goal lead to take home from Paris, despite defender Jeremy Mathieu’s deflected own goal taking the sheen off the scoreline.

A 2-0 win over Valencia was sandwiched in between the two legs, allowing Barca to retain its lead in La Liga and focus on finishing the job in front of its own fans.

PSG will need to be brave to not consider the tie already lost. After finally getting revenge over Chelsea in the previous round the team now looks unlikely to progress any further. The heavy home defeat means the team is not just behind on aggregate but on away goals as well. Even should the team score twice in Catalonia to level the aggregate score the team will still trail 3-2 on away goals, making Mathieu’s own goal very small consolation.

Marquinhos has urged his Paris Saint-Germain team-mates not to give up hope of overturning a two-goal deficit against Barcelona in the Champions League today.

“This victory in Nice was the best possible preparation for today. It was a very average first half, but we were much better in the second half,” he said.

“This success is good, especially when it comes to regaining confidence after Wednesday’s defeat against Barcelona.

“The return leg at Camp Nou will be very intense and very difficult, but we will go there with the aim of qualifying, with our first intention being to defend well.

The Parisians will now have to push forward looking to score, but will then risk becoming vulnerable to Barcelona’s ability to keep possession and hit hard on the counter-attack. With the odds stacked against them, Laurent Blanc and his team will need something incredible to make it through to the next round.

Barcelona’s attacking trio of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar are all fit for the clash and midfielder Andres Iniesta is available again after missing the weekend’s match with a back injury.

For PSG, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Marco Verratti both return from suspension. Defender Thiago Silva is ruled out with a thigh injury after being forced off the pitch in the first leg, while midfielder Thiago Motta and right-back Serge Aurier are also expected to miss out.

Barcelona defender, Dani Alves has warned his side against complacency ahead of the return at the Camp Nou against PSG.

“We will not speculate with the result because we don’t know how to,” Alves said.

“The philosophy and the spirit of the team is to challenge for every ball as if it was the last.

“We cannot think about our advantage, but just control the game and look to score from the first minute. That is the only way to overcome PSG.”
