The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Solomon Arase, has been ordered to appear before the Police Service Commission (PSC) with all officers and men of the force who have been indicted for misconduct.

PSC chairman, Mike Okiro, stated this in Abuja, Wednesday, August 5, 2015, while disclosing that the commission has commenced investigations into alleged police misconduct in the country in line with its Constitutional mandate to hold the police force accountable at all times.

“The commission has noted several reports from both the media and the public on allegations of unlawful police actions and has decided to Institute investigations into these perceived anomalies, in the interest of the rule of law, human rights and natural justice.

“All police officers involved in serious cases of misconduct will henceforth appear before the disciplinary committee of the commission,” he said.

The PSC will be looking into the recent brutalisation of an eight months pregnant woman in Satellite Town, Lagos, who was said to have lost her pregnancy due to alleged police indiscretion;  the death of one Benson Obode, who was reportedly arrested in Benin City, Edo State, on May 21, 2015, and detained in a cell where he died; and  a petition from a rights group, Youth Advancement and Leadership Development Initiative, over the death of a young lady due to careless and negligent driving by some men of the Mobile Police Force who were escorting a bullion van.

Okiro also directed that victims, their relations or counsel should appear before the PSC with material evidence to substantiate their case.
