Fresh crisis is brewing at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, over the appointment of Professor Ayobami Taofeek Salami, former Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics) of the university, as the new Vice Chancellor.

The appointment was announced by the Governing Council of the University shortly after the council’s meeting held in Abuja on Monday.

There have been litigations on the appointment on a new Vice Chancellor for the institution.

The non-teaching staff of the university, including the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non Academic Staff Union (NASU), had kicked against the selection process.

Following the announcement of Salami as the new Vice Chancellor, staff of the university have embarked on a protest against the choice, alleging that he was sponsored to replace Bamitale Omole, the outgoing Vice Chancellor, to cover his deeds in the office.

Independent gathered that the workers have alleged that Omole mismanaged money belonging to the university, amounting to several millions of naira.

At the time of filling this report, it was learnt that the workers of the university had chased other non-aligned staff out of their offices and locked up the buildings in protest against the appointment.
