Human rights activists in Benin City, the Edo State capital, on Monday besieged the offices of telecommunications providers, protesting the xenophobic attacks in South Africa.

The activists are protesting the killings of Nigerians and other foreigners as well as the looting of their shops in the wake of the attacks in Kwazulu-Natal province.

South  Africans are demanding that foreigners should leave the country, claiming that their limited resources should not be shared.

The activists appealed to the Federal Government to commence evacuation of Nigerians living in South Africa without further delay.

A Nigerian envoy in South Africa had on Saturday ruled out the possibility of immediate evacuation of citizens from the troubled province.

The Acting High Commissioner to South Africa, Martin Cobham, said it was a bit too early to consider the evacuation option.
