Osita Okechukwu is the National Publicity Secretary of Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP). In this interview with IFEOMA ONONYE, he states why he strongly believes that this visit will be different from previous ones. Excerpts…

Some commentators are of the opinion that there may be no different impact from President Buhari’s recent visit to the United States. Their argument is based on the fact that past leaders have gone for the same visit and all they brought back were promises that made little or no difference, do you share in this opinion?

President Muhammadu Buhari’s visit has repositioned Nigeria in the world map. He has gotten Nigeria reconnected to the world. His visit to the US has transitional advantage. His (Buhari’s) visit has made the United States to realign their commitment to help us fight insurgency. Under the administration of former president, Goodluck Jonathan, USA stopped supporting us against Boko Haram, now they have reaffirmed their commitment to help fight insurgency. They have also promised to give economic help. Buhari’s visit has enormous influence that made the US government to agree to raise 2.1billion dollars to help improve the devastated North-Eastern Niger. The third thing and one of the most important things Nigeria stands to gain is the fact that most stolen funds, running into billions of dollars, can be recovered from some United States accounts. Now that is weighty enough for an administration to achieve. To me, the visit has been very rewarding for Nigeria.

But the same United States came when the Chibok girls’ case was at its peak and they left without achieving anything, how sure are we that this time their promise to help fight Boko Haram will yield positive results?

The united states recognize what President Buhari stands for, which is his integrity. They saw him as an incorruptible man and they believe they can work with him unlike what they saw in the former president.  For the president of the United States to say this, I believe there will be a positive story this time as far as fighting Boko Haram is concerned.
