Coach of Lagos Islanders Basketball team, Lateef Erinfolami, has bemoaned the inadequate funding and sponsorship of Nigerian Basketball league, saying such situation has left the nation’s slam and dunking game reeling behind that of other African countries.

In an interview with Daily Independent in Lagos, Erinfolami said even though dearth of funding in sports in Nigeria is not restricted to basketball alone, he said the ugly situation has left basketball players merely managing to make both ends meet.

“It is a general problem in Nigeria. But it is so bad in basketball. Yes, we have to thank the DStv for the league, which they are sponsoring, but that is not enough.

“We need adequate funding of the game for us to make inroad and catch up with countries like Angola. Over there, they prioritise the game, but same cannot be said over here.”

The coach said the management of his club is doing its best to motivate the players, vowing that Lagos Islanders will qualify for the play-off, saying its ambition is to represent Nigeria in the continent.
