The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Edo State Police Command, DSP Stephen Onwuchei, has stated that the job of policing Nigeria is a very difficult task because the criminal knows the police but the police do not know the criminal.

“Policing Nigeria is a very difficult job as you’re looking for a criminal who knows you but you do not know him,” he disclosed.

However, he affirmed that with cooperation between the police and the media the task would be made much easier. In this wise, he appealed to the media to be formidable partners with the police in the war against criminals.

Onwuchei was speaking while on a courtesy visit to the leadership of the state council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, in its secretariat in GRA, Benin.

Going further, Onwuchei who is newly posted to the state police command, promised to operate an open door policy whereby journalists in the state will be given all the support they need to get balanced reports of crime events.

He stressed that the police will in line with the mantra of quality service been advocated by the IGP, Solomon Arase, ensure that the state is safe for all and sundry.

Responding, Desmond Agbama, chairman of the state council of NUJ, promised that the activities of the police, especially as it relates to crime fighting, would receive coverage by reporters. He also

advocated for a change in the modus operandi of police investigation/detection of crime such that criminals are prevented from gaining an edge over the police in the scheme of things.
