The police in Bauchi State have uncovered a new method through which criminals cheat people at Automatic Teller Machines (ATM) in the state.

State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Haruna Mohammed, disclosed this in a statement in Bauchi, the state capital.

He said members of the syndicate position themselves at various ATM centres and approach their victims, especially the illiterate ones under pretext of assisting them to withdraw their money for them.

Haruna said instead of withdrawing the money for the victims, the criminals transfer it online into their own accounts and return the ATM cards to the owners with false excuses of network problems thereby fleeing from the venue.

The police spokesman assured of protection of lives and properties of the citizens in the state but cautioned people not to give their ATM cards or passwords to strangers to avoid being cheated.

Haruna urged people to report any suspicious person to nearest police stations or call police emergency number 08151849417 for help.

Meanwhile, the PPRO has announced that the command would auction some recovered and unclaimed properties which have over stayed in police custody in accordance with Section 31 of Police Act Cap 2, Vol. 13 LRN,  2004.

According to him, the command had obtained approval  from the Chief Magistrate Court VI in the state for the  disposal of the properties by way of public auction.
