The police in Onitsha on Thursday confirmed that it had recovered the bodies of six traders who drowned in Sakamori drainage channel during last week Saturday’s torrential rain.

The six traders who traded on clothes were said to have been plunged into the deep Sakamori drainage that ran through the length of Onitsha emptying into the River Niger during the torrential rain and were swept away by the furious flood water.

Eye witnesses said the incident happened late in the evening at the foot of Upper Iweka Flyover by Ezeiweka Road Junction, along Onitsha – Owerri road, Onitsha, Anambra state.  According to the account, the traders were standing on planks used to cover the top of the Sakamori gutter which they converted to kiosks when suddenly the makeshift plank caved in and all six traders plunged into the gutter.

Cries for assistance were raised but nobody dared do much in the face of the raging flood.

The Police from Okpoko and Atani divisions recovered the corpses. The Divisional Police Officer at Okpoko, told newsmen on that only one of the corpses was recovered from a water drainage within his own jurisdiction.

The Divisional Police officer of Atani confirmed that two of the other five corpses were recovered on Wednesday, while the other three including a female were recovered on Thursday from different directions within the Idemili River at Odekpe, along the Onitsha/Odekpe /Atani/ Ossomala/ Ogwuikpele road.

The Publicity Secretary of Anambra Markets Amalgamated Traders Association, AMATAS, Uzor A. Uzor described the incident as very unfortunate and regretted that most of the traders in Onitsha do not like to move into the market where there are vacant shops but rather prefer to do businesses at the roadsides.
