10-year-old Jonathan Adewuyi, an apprentice trader has alleged that Operatives of Ayinla Police Division, Agbado, tortured his father, Sina Adewuyi, a bricklayer, and indigene of Ilesha, Osun State to death.

The incident was said to have occurred at No. 4 Itoki Road, Itoki where the 45 year old victim resides.

Jonathan told our correspondent that it all started between 3pm and 4 pm on Saturday when a team of police came to extort money from his master, one Dona Okey, a spare parts dealer.

According to Jonathan who said his master’s spare parts shop is located in the same compound where he lives with his parents, the policemen had come to extort money from his master as they usually did, but on that day, “My master told them (police) he had no money with him. My father came out from the house, he saw curious to know what happened that police came to our compound. But they shouted on him and asked him to get out. He told them he lives in the compound, and they started to beat him.

“He tried to run away from them, but they chased him, caught up with him, hit him with the butts of gun and asked him to enter their bus. He refused. They bundled him into the bus and took him away. He did not return till about 10pm. He was in pains and with marks of brutality on his body. He was complaining of headache and chest pains.

We bought Paracetamol for him; he drank it but vomited it. My mother said we will take him to the hospital in the morning since it was already late. But around 5 am on Sunday, he died.”

Jonathan added that the family reported the matter to the Sango Ota Area Command of the Ogun State Police Command on that Sunday morning, but were advised to go and incident the matter at Agbodo (Ayinla) division.

“The matter was reported at Ayinla, police came to our house, took photograph of my late father before he was taken to the mortuary for autopsy. They said we should come back to the station on Monday.

“I went with family members. They brought so many policemen for identification parade. I was able to identify two among the police men that took my father away after beating him,” the 10-year-old said.

When contacted, the Area Commander, Sango Ota Area Commander, Adegoke Fayoade, an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) confirmed the report but added that the matter was under investigation.

He said that the two suspects identified have been transferred to the Ogun State Police Command’s Headquarters, Abeokuta to face the Commissioner of Police.

The Public Relations Officer, Ogun State Police Command Muyiwa Adejobi said the command has commenced investigation.

“Two policemen have been arrested. If they are found culpable, they will face the music. We are waiting for the autopsy report of the deceased. If the result proves he was beaten to death, whoever did that will face the music. We are in the era of modern policing. The question of unknown police is no longer tenable”.

Meanwhile, the widow of the late Sina, Mrs. Tunrayo Adewuyi has called on the Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosu, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Solomon Arase and the Federal Government to come to her assistance and ensure the killers of her husband are brought to book.

“He is the bread winner of the family. I am only a petty trader. I have six children, four boys and two girls. I am 35 year-old. We got married in 2002. Who will help me? I don’t have anybody. The government should come to my aid” the 35-year-old widow cried out.
