The Nigeria Police, Bayelsa State Command, on Thursday said its men foiled an attempt by a gang of kidnappers to abduct a brother to the former Minister of Petroleum, Diezani Allison-Madueke, Egedegu Agama.

The police announced this in a statement signed by the public relations officer, Asinim Butswat.

According to the statement, the police acted on a tip-off at 3:30pm on Wednesday when the hoodlums had concluded plans to take Agama away.

Butswat said policemen laid an ambush at the Marine Police Waterside in Yenagoa from where the people of Yenaka, the ex-minister’s village, and other neighbouring communities access their area.

The police spokesman said four members of the gang were arrested.

He gave their names as Bethel Alasuo, 37, Jackson Ofolo, 28, from Ondewari community in Southern Ijaw Council, Ezibor Ibilo, 33, from Gbarain community, and Funpere Kpou, 28, from Gbarantoru community.

“The police recovered one Makarov pistol, two T-shirts with the inscription “Security” at the back and two bandanas that could be used as face mask,” Butswat said.

He noted that the suspects were now in custody at the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department and investigation into the incident has commenced in earnest ongoing.
