Police Arrest Kogi Lawmaker

The member representing Igalamela/Odolu constituency in the Kogi State House of Assembly,Hon. Friday Sani, has been apprehended by the men of the Special Anti Robbery Squad, Abuja.

The lawmaker was ‘picked’ on Friday evening while on a business transaction at Nsukka, in the eastern part of the country.

His counsel and former member of the state House of Assembly,  Barr. John Adele, who disclosed this at a media briefing in Lokoja yesterday, said Hon. Sani was arrested at Nsukka while purchasing some

items to ensure a hitch-free annual Odolu Day celebration scheduled for yesterday-Saturday.

He strongly condemned the unlawful behaviour of the police, saying the arrest of the lawmaker based on trump up charges violated the fundamental rights of his client.

He added that since Hon. Sani is a known figure, the police ought to have intuited him, if there is any matter to be thrashed out rather than shooting two tyres of his BMW vehicle in order to apprehend him.

The legal practitioner further enjoined the police not to allow themselves to be used based on frivolous petitions and allegations, stressing the need for the new Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase not to interfere with legal and political matter.

He stressed just like previous trump up charges against his client, they were confident that this present baseless allegations of criminal intimidation, conspiracy and robbery would not stand.

Adele attributed the travails of his client to his political detractors, after losing the state assembly poll in April, maintaining that the victory of Hon. Sani in the just conclude election was an embarrassment to some people in the area.

Also speaking, the chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party in the local government, Isah Adejoh decried the high level of impunity by politicians in the country, even as he described the action of the police as barbaric.

He said the detractors of their leader want to give him a bad name in order to hang him, adding this unfounded allegation of calling Hon. Sani a criminal by some selfish politicians is unacceptable by the people of the area.
