A tricycle operator, Soji Arogundade, 24, was at the weekend arraigned before a Chief Magistrate’s court in Lagos Island for allegedly raping a 14-year-old girl.

The culprit, who has no fixed address, is facing a two-count charge of ?assault and unlawful carnal knowledge of the victim preferred against him by the police.

Prosecutor Francisca Okere told the court that the defendant committed the offences at Sura market in Lagos Island.

She also stated that the defendant assaulted the teenager by beating her with blows that caused injuries.

According to the prosecutor, after Arogundade assaulted the victim, he went ahead to rape her.

The victim who helps her mother to sell fruits, on that fateful day was hawking the fruits when the defendant called her and bought some fruit from her?, with the promise to pay her before the end of the day, which he failed to do.

The prosecutor told the court that when the victim went to meet the defendant to collect the money for fruits at about 4pm, he delayed her till 7pm when she insisted that she must collect the money as she was helping her mother, who was a widow and that is what she used to cater for the family.

Subsequently, Arogundade asked her to follow him to a place where he was going to collect the money from one of his friends, but when they got there, the defendant with the help of his friends raped the victim.

When the charges were read to him, Arogundade pleaded not guilty.

Counsel to the defendant, Ozioma Ahaoma, urged the court to grant the defendant bail in the most liberal terms as the charge was just an allegation, which must be proved beyond reasonable doubt, and presumption of innocence still stands for the defendant.

Magistrate Omolabi granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200,000, with two sureties in like sum.

The case was adjourned till October 12, for mention.
