The Niger State police command has debunked claims that students of Police Secondary School (PSS) situated along western by-pass, Minna, were involved in renewed cases of house breaking and theft in the school vicinity.
Residents of Shaanu village, Minna metropolis and its environs had been living in fears in the past few months following a resurgence of criminal activities involving persons suspected to be students of the PSS, Minna.
Consequently, the community appealed for increased police presence to check the activities of kid criminals.
Yunusa Umar, one of the residents, told our correspondent how the suspects broke into their home at night and carted away valuables including cash, electronics and handsets.
The suspected kid criminals were said to have invaded the house of a lecturer of the school and smashed his car windscreen as a punishment for daring to punish one of the students for his notoriety in luring junior students and new entrants into petty crimes.
Besides house breaking and stealing, some of the students allegedly indulged in initiating fellow students into homosexuality, cultism and use hard drugs such as Cannabis Sattiva (Indian hemp). Yunusa also narrated how the criminals visited one of the teachers at night but perhaps out of sympathy removed the two sim cards which they dropped on her bed before disappearing into the dark with her two mobile phones while she was fast asleep.
It was alleged that suspected student criminals usually jump the school fence before setting out on their nefarious activities in the neighbourhood.
The activities of criminals, Yunusa said, were becoming a nightmare to residents and therefore appealed to the police to intensify surveillance of the area as well check drug addiction among youths.
ASP Elkanah Bala, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Niger Ntate Police Command, denied the involvement of PSS, Minna student in any form of crime, adding however that the command has beefed up security within the surrounding areas to checkmate the gang.
The PPRO said, “Our students are all well behaved; again we have policemen on duty there day and night and they are always there watching over the students 24 hours to ensure that they are secure day and night.”
