Enugu – Professor Ben Nwabueze, renowned constitutional lawyer and elder statesman, on Wednesday in Enugu expressed concern over an alleged ongoing plot to Islamise Nigeria.

Nwabueze said the plan to Islamise the nation “is real and not something being conjured up.”

The professor of law spoke with journalists at the sideline of a meeting of Igbo leaders of thought in Enugu.

Nwabueze explained that the meeting was important to them because they had not met for more than a year and they had in the agenda such critical issues as Islamisation agenda and its impact on the unity of the country.

“Islamisation agenda is real. It is not something that somebody has just conjured up and it is there. And it is being implemented gradually. Look at the security agencies. Every aspect of security, Islamists are in control in its entirety.

“They are methodical the way they are going about its implementation. Look at Fulani herdsmen menace. It is part of it”, he said.

Professor Nwabueze said Igbo leaders of thought have listed a number of positions on the Islamisation issue, which would be embodied in their communiqué from the meeting.

On the Fulani herdsmen menace, he called for establishment of grazing reserves, while urging the South East governors to meet and say that they do not want this anymore and that the herdsmen should go somewhere else.

Asked to comment on the electoral reforms committee inaugurated by the Federal Government under the chairmanship of former Senate President Ken Nnamani, Nwabueze dismissed the committee, saying it has nothing to do with Igbo leaders of thought.

Professor Nwabueze, however, advised those agitating for an independent state of Biafra to be tactful, saying that they should define their objectives.

“The agitation for Biafra, you will appreciate what is going on, to box the Igbo, to box them, so that they will say ah! we are pulling out. And then they will launch the final solution to the Igbo problem. Our people must not play into their hands.

“I support the agitations, but you should define your objective. What do you want? Self-determination, okay; that is the best thing. Use it as a cover. Don’t come out openly and say you are agitating because you want sovereign state of Biafra. Can you have sovereign state of Biafra within sovereign state of Nigeria? You have to be extremely tactful”, Nwabueze said.

Other Igbo leaders at the meeting include Secretary of Igbo Leaders of Thought, Professor Elochukwu Amucheazi; Deputy Chairman, Professor Chinwelite Ejike; former Anambra State Governor, Chukwuemeka Ezeife; Mrs. Maria Okwor, Senator Anyim Ude, Nduka Eya and Professor Race Achara, among others.

Good meeting. I believe this will unit the Igbo more. All the igbo states should see themsalves as one and must forge one unit which must be channeled towards developing the Eastern region and which they may bring in some south south state of igbo speaking because anywhere you are as long as you are from igbo race, you are an igbo man. God will lead you all well to deliberate on how to forge the igbo nation forward. God bless igbo leaders, God bless igbo land and God bless igbo nation.

When Buhari was doing campaign he mentioned that on know account would Islamise Nigeria. But if he tries to do it, God will stripe him down. God will fight for Igbos and we will hold our peace.
