Steve Oma-Ofozor,

Gbenga Ogunbote, Coach of Giwa FC of Jos has said that the business of football would be made meaningful if players’ welfare remains top priority of the management as it is done at Giwa FC of Jos.

Speaking to Independent on Tuesday from Jos, Plateau State capital after the team’s morning training session, the former Shooting Stars of Ibadan handler revealed that salaries were paid before the end of the month at Giwa.

“I have got my salary for this month (March) yesterday. I’m happy at such development and that is what it should be if the game of football must move forward in Nigeria,” Ogunbote enthused.

Speaking further, he said: “Here at Giwa the management, which of course is headed by Giwa (owner of the club), does not compromise the welfare of the players. Players’ welfare comes first before any other issue. What the players earn presently may not be the best in the country, but it is encouraging.

Although Ogunbote declined to mention the players monthly salary as well as his own he said, “The players are professional. Football is the only job they do for living and for their future to be made meaningful, the package must be good and regular.

Ogunnbote who has handled other top flight clubs in Nigeria concluding said that the improved welfare package was the motivation behind Giwa’s 2-1 trouncing of Ikorodu United in Lagos, during the Nigeria Professional League (NPFL) Week 7 fixtures.
