Michel Platini, president of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has announced his resignation from the office to enable him concentrate on the “fight before the Swiss courts to prove my probity”.

Platini, former France football star, has been in court to prove his innocence as he was indicted in a series of corruption scandals in December at the Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA), such as accepting SFr2 million from FIFA, alongside other officials of the football body, including former FIFA president, Sepp Blatter.

The FIFA ethics and investigation committee banned Platini for six years from any football office, but he denied all wrongdoing and appealed the ruling at the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS).

Platini resignation Monday came after he lost his appeal at CAs in Lausanne.

The court reduced his sentence from six years to four years, upholding the charges of financial misconduct brought against him by FIFA.CAS also reduced his fine to SFr60.000.

Platini said after the CAS ruling, “I consider it a profound injustice.

“This decision inflicts a suspension for which the length stops me, de facto, and by luck, from being a candidate in the next FIFA presidential election.

“As agreed with the national associations, I resign as president of UEFA to pursue my fight before the Swiss courts to prove my probity in this case. Life has always kept beautiful surprises for me, now I am free to live them.”
