Authorities in Plateau State have issued a directive banning the movement of cattle and herdsmen after 7pm in Riyom, Barkin Ladi, Mangu and Jos South Local Government Areas of the state.

Plateau State has been a hotbed of ethino-religious crises, with the additional element of herdsmen-farmers conflict and Islamist terrorism making the protection of life and property a delicate task for security agencies.

There have been accusations and counter-accusation of herders destroying farmlands and food crops while grazing cattle and on the other hands allegations of cattle theft by natives.

Major General Tagbo Ude, Commander of the Special Task Force, Operation Safe Haven, made the announcement during a town hall meeting involving community leaders, village heads and residents of the communities as part of measures to keep the peace.

The prohibition of night grazing was one of the agreements reached at the town hall meeting. Participants expressed hope that all stakeholders would follow the directives and embrace peace for the sake of development.
