Jos – There was pandemonium in the Plateau State House of Assembly on Thursday as 10 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmakers staged a walk-out over the six-month tenure extension for the management committee chairmen of the 17 local government of the state.

Rt. Hon. Peter Azi, Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, had read a communication from Governor Simon Lalong asking for the extension of the tenure of management committee chairmen of the 17 LGC to six months for stability and focus.

According to the governor, the six months’ extension was to allow the government to put some necessary machinery in place for a conducive conduct of the council polls in the state.

Contributing on the floor of the assembly a member representing Kantana state constituency under the platform of the PDP and Hon. Yusuf Gagdi, the deputy speaker, said they were in the receipt of 11 petitions against the management committee chairmen which were all from the APC fold in the state.

According to him, if the management committee chairmen were doing well, they would not have been petitioned against them most especially that the petitions are coming from APC.

He pointed out that they are allegation of massive corruption level against these management committee chairmen by their members of the management committees and party  stakeholders arguing that there tenure should not be extended more than two months as earlier resolved by the House.

Also Hon. Ibrahim Baba Hassan, member representing Jos North, North Constituency, on his own part, supporting the request by the Governor, urging the house to consider the six months’ tenure extension to pave way for proper planning of council election in the state.

Just as Hon. Peter Azi, the Speaker, had wanted to put the motion on a voice vote, 10 PDP lawmakers staged a walk-out from the House chamber thereby making it possible to APC lawmakers to have their way by giving the council management committees  six months’ extension.

Speaker Azi thereafter dissolved all the standing committees of the House to give room for fresh constitution of new standing committees of the House.
