Members of the National Assembly have been charged on the need to maintain the integrity and independence of the legislature in the discharge of their legislative functions.

A political analyst and Pharmacist, Sir George Ezenwa who spoke to the press in Awka advised the lawmakers against being rubber stamps to the executive, saying that the independence of the legislature was the only way to fulfill the mandate reposed on the legislature by the masses.

He urged them to deemphasise collection of fat allowances and be patriotic to reflect the global economic meltdown which calls for sacrifice and service oriented leadership.

He warned that the old order of parading of financial flamboyance which characterised the Assembly status should give way to financial prudence to feel with the masses that elected them into office.

Meanwhile, a former Commissioner for Commerce and Industry in Anambra State, Chief Kenneth Arinze says the political horse trading which produced Senator Bukola Saraki and Hon. Yakubu Dogara as senate president and speaker House of Representatives respectively heralded the maturity of the nation’s democracy.

Chief Arinze who also spoke to the press in Awka on the growth of Nigeria’s democracy said he was satisfied with the ripples which trailed the emergence of Saraki and Dogara, describing such as a catalyst for good governance.

He urged the lawmakers to work tower a perfect blend of the ideologies of APC and PDP on national issues rather than bring division in effective governance.
