Security operatives attached to Ikeja Local Government Area of Lagos have arrested no fewer than ten pedestrians in the last one week for crossing the expressway, instead of using the pedestrian bridge.

Daily Independent gathered that authorities of the council, who were embarrassed by reports of persons being killed, while crossing the popular and ever-busy Lagos-Abeokuta expressway at Ikeja bus-stop, detailed some plain clothes security officers to the place.

According to a source at the council, one Mr Enanovo, an officer of the Nigerian Legion, co-ordinated the operation code-named: Operation-rescue-Lagosians – from-death, where some 10 persons, who crossed the expressway, were arrested. Enanovo was said to be assisted by some officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), police officers attached to the council, as well as Neighborhood Watch officials, who were all in plain clothes instead of uniforms.

Sunday Chuks, a news vendor at Ikeja, who witnessed the arrest, said that the people arrested were made to do frog jump for about thirty minutes, before they were allowed to go after being given stern warning to always use the pedestrian bridge, or risk being arrested again.

Mrs Funmi Afolabi of the Information Unit at the local council confirmed the incident, saying that Ikeja local government cherishes the lives of people in Lagos.

But, further investigations along the expressway revealed that people are still risking their lives to cross the expressway, instead of using the pedestrian bridges.
