Chief Dan Orbih is the Edo State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). In this telephone interview with TEMIDAYO AKINSUYI, he spoke on the chances of his party  winning the September 10 governorship election in the state. Excerpts:

Edo state governor, Adams Oshiomhole is rounding up his tenure as a two-term governor of the state.  How will you describe his performance so far?

Maybe in the first three years of his tenure, he worked for the interest of the party but in the past six years of his administration, he has been working for himself. He has totally abandoned the good people of Edo who voted him twice. In the last four years, there is nothing on ground to show as his achievements. Now, the people of Edo are saying ‘enough is enough’.  Oshiomhole’s poor achievement is helping us in our mission of winning the election come September 10.

What gives you the confidence that Pastor Osagie Ize- Iyamu, the governorship candidate of your party will win the governorship election in Edo scheduled for September 10?

I have been with him to all parts of the state and I have also accompanied him to see different groups within the state. I can tell you from what is on ground, we are not just thinking of winning but will do so by a very wide margin.  The candidate of APC, Godwin Obaseki is no match for our candidate.  Obaseki knows that; the governor himself knows that and APC supporters in the state know that is true.

The governorship candidate of the APC, Godwin Obaseki said he lost his certificates and has presented a sworn affidavit to that effect. Why is the Edo PDP still challenging him on that ?

He ( Obaseki) has no certificate.  That was why he went to a court in Abuja so that people in Benin will not know.  But in our usual manner, we got all the relevant papers, including the affidavit he went to swear to in Abuja instead of Benin High Court.  He didn’t want the electorates in Edo to know that he has no certificate.  Now he is saying that his certificates are missing but he did not state what year and the exact place it got missing. There was no formal report to the police when the certificates got missing so the police is not aware that his certificates were missing. Also, when you look at the affidavit he swore to, he said he was admitted into university in 1973 and graduated in 1976. He did not do A’levels.  So, there is no way he could have graduated within three years.  So, from his  sworn affidavit, there is lot of discrepancies. He said he graduated in 1976, but he did not participate in the National Youth Service scheme till 1979 and also his NYSC certificate is missing. His primary school certificate is missing.  I think at this juncture, the man should just own up and tell Edo people the simple truth that he has no certificate instead of using an affidavit as a cover-up. If you will recall,  Oshiomhole came up with the same story. Everybody in Edo knows that Oshiomhole has no certificate and I am not surprised because birds of a feather flock together. Now, he has brought his business partner who also has no certificate to succeed him as governor. He is telling us that Obaseki is a technocrat. Technocrat my foot. Obaseki knows nothing about governance or politics. He has nothing to offer the people of Edo.

Your party also alleged that Governor Oshiomhole is desperate given the manner he has been campaigning for Obaseki. What makes  you think so?

He is desperate because he has looted our resources in the state. Don’t forget, he has used the state resources to build a university in his village in the name of Public Private Partnership. The company that is going into the partnership with him is Afrinvest, Godwin Obaseki’s company.  The interesting thing is that in the past one year, we have facts that show clearly that they have spent over N30b on that project in the last nine months. I challenged him to show us how much his business partners who are going into the business venture with him are contributing to the project. I can tell you quite frankly that they did not contribute a dime to that project.  So, with this type of high-level fraud, you can be sure why he is desperate to bring his business partner to contest the election and succeed him. Obaseki, whom he claimed to the head of his Economic team, was the one that facilitated the loan from the capital market which amounts to N30b for the Storm Water project.  For that alone, Obaseki collected a commission of N3.5b and here is the man Oshiomhole said has not collected any allowance or salary as the head of his Economic team.  If a man gets N3.5b from one transaction from the state government, what does he need salary for?  How much salary would they have paid him?  So, that explains why the governor is so desperate to install Obaseki so that he can cover his tracks and the looting will continue but my joy is that Edo people now knows him better and they are determined to ensure that they are voted out of office.

What confidence do you have that INEC will conduct a free, fair and conclusive election come September 10?

We have said it severally at our campaign. Edo PDP is not asking INEC to do us any favour.  The only favour we want from INEC is to come to Edo and conduct a free, fair, credible and conclusive election.  They should do what is expected of them as an election umpire.  The joy of the people of Edo is to have a transparent election where the most popular candidate that is voted for by the people will be declared the winner. If for any reason, INEC comes to Edo state with the intention of wanting to subvert the will of the people,  we are going to resist it.  I believe INEC know what is right. They should come to the state on September 10, conduct a credible election and walk away freely. If for any reason, they come with the intention of wanting to rig the election for any candidate, Edo people will resist them and I doubt if any of their officials will get out of the state.
