•Jibrin quits race, adopts Dogara

•APC leaders meet Senators, Reps today

By Rotimi Akinwunmi –  AbujaThe Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members in the House of Representatives are in a quandary over the offer of the slot of Deputy Speaker to the caucus by the team of Yakubu Dogara (APC Bauchi) who is angling to become the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Dogara who is fighting for the seat with Femi Gbajabiamila (APC Lagos), had his ambition punctured when his adopted Deputy Speaker candidate, Lasun Yusuf (APC Osun) dumped him and pitched tent with Gbajabiamila.

However, a sort of succour was added to his blood yesterday when Abdulmumin Jibrin (APC Kano) announced his withdrawals from the race and adopted the candidature of Dogara.

Jibrin who was the first member of the parliament to declare his ambition for the speakership, had about three weeks ago, struck an accord with the Gbajabiamila team to step down for him, but his desire to become the Deputy Speakership candidate to Gbajabiamila which was turned down put paid to the agreement.

However, he said yesterday that he stepped down from the race for Dogara because he believes in the capability of Dogara to provide good leadership for the lower parliament.

But the search for Deputy Speakership candidate by the Dogara camp is causing ripples within the ranks of PDP members in the parliament as Dogara is said to have dangled the seat at the current Deputy Leader of the House, Leo Ogor (PDP Delta).

Dogara’s campaign team were also said to have promised the PDP members a sharing formula of 50-50 in the distribution of Chairmanship of Committees in the House.

While some members of the PDP camp believed Dogara will keep to his promise if he emerges as the Speaker, quite a number of them are afraid the Bauchi born parliamentarian might renege on his promises.

According to sources, both Gbajabiamila and Dogara were slated to make appearance at the retreat held for elected parliamentarians on the platform of PDP held in Port Harcourt on Monday to sell their agenda and candidature to the PDP team, the opposition party leadership however, objected to the plan, asking both candidates to stay away.

The issue was nonetheless discussed within the PDP camp after the retreat where majority of the PDP members agreed that Dogara has closer affinity to the party than Gbajabiamila as Dogara was a former member of the PDP.

He decamped from the PDP to the APC about nine months ago.

A member from Benue State, who craved anonimity told Daily Independent in confidence that majority of the PDP members are happy that Dogara is looking in their direction to get his ambition realised as he has offered them the Deputy Speaker slot as well as substantial chairmanship slot of the House committee.

However, in a bid to resolve the issue of the leadership of the national assembly, the National Working Committee (NWC) of the APC will today (Thursday) meet with all federal lawmakers elected on the platform of the party to decide on the zoning of the seats, and the candidates to be adopted for the seats.

Jibrin in his speech at the press conference held at the National Assembly yesterday however said that no matter the zoning arrangement adopted by the APC leaders, members of the parliament will take their own decisions on the floor of the House and elect anyone they believe in, rather than follow the party’s directive dogmatically.
