The All Progressive Congress (APC) led government in Niger state has challenged all government officials who participated in looting the state while they served under the immediate past administration to, ‘return all the loots and have peace’.
The state government apparently reacting to claims by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) claim that those who served under the former government is being witch-hunted by the ruling APC by the ‘secret’ setting up of committees to probe the Dr. Babangida Aliyu led government.
Niger state PDP Vice chairman, Tanko Beji while speaking journalists after the party’s meeting in Minna had challenged the Abubarkar Sani Bello led APC government to be open in its findings as, ‘the PDP is not scared of the government and its planned probe’.
“We are aware that the government is secretly setting up of committees in the name of facts finding, why is the state government afraid of coming out to tell Nigerlites what they are doing or even make pubic their findings instead of operating like a cult”.
The APC government, Beji had said is not only being selective but witch-hunting political appointees and some government officials who served in the immediate past government of Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu under the guise of trying to recover ‘looted funds’.
State commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Mr. Jonathan Vatsa absolved the state government of with-hunting officials of the past administration noting however that, “Their shadow is chasing them for downgrading Niger state”.
Vatsa who told our correspondent that the handover notes from the immediate past government was empty was however not emphatic on the possibility of the APC administration probing Babangida Aliyu to ‘recover looted funds’.
The commissioner told all those holding unto tax-payers’ money to release same to enable the state government work saying, “There is nothing in the handover notes they gave us, the debts inherited is so overwhelming and the situation in the local government councils stinks”.
“I want to advice the immediate past government officials to return all their loot, if they do so nobody will witch-hunt them but as long as they are holding unto monies that are meant for the generality of Nigerlites, they will know no peace”, Vatsa said.
