The crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) took another dimension on Wednesday with the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) announcing it had formally taken over the leadership of the party following when the crisis will be resolved.

Walid Jibrin, chairman of the BoT, told members of staff of the party at its national secretariat, Abuja, that both the party’s National Working Committee led by former Governor Ali Modu-Sheriff and the Interim National Caretaker Committee led by former Governor Ahmed Makarfi had been sacked.

The party BoT had convened an enlarged meeting of all stakeholders last week, where it was agreed that the caretaker committee set up at the Port-Harcourt convention should be supported.

Aside from the former national chairman of the party, Ali Modu-Sheriff, all contending factions in the party agreed to drop their grievances and openly support the caretaker committee under the leadership of former Governor Ahmed Makarfi.

However, signs of a change in direction emerged on Wednesday at the end of a meeting of the BoT leaders with members of the administrative staff of the party at the national secretariat in Abuja.

The secretariat, which had been sealed-off since May 22 on the orders of the Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, was reopened on Tuesday, allowing the staffers to have access to their offices after more than nine days of closure by the police.

The BoT chairman, Senator Walid Jibrin, speaking at the interactive session held inside the National Executive Committee (NEC) hall, said there could not be a vacuum in the party, as he justified the leaders’ action in taking over the administration of the party, saying, “Nobody has taken the BoT to court”.

While acknowledging the existence of conflicting court orders, he, however, assured that “the matter will be resolved”.

“You are aware that this place was sealed by the Nigeria police, the reason was to keep the secretariat very safe.

“We the BoT have been asked under the constitution of the party to be in charge of the assets and the liabilities of the PDP generally.

“It is in that respect that the Inspector General of Police, having considered the importance of our constitution and having considered the importance of the staff of the PDP headquarters here, has directed that this place be opened and not only be opened but is entrusted in the hands of the BoT.

“Today, the BoT remains the only legal body now in the whole set up and that is why we are here to play our role.

“We are here to perform our duty according to PDP constitution, hoping that our problems will soon be resolved.”

On the effort to reconcile aggrieved members, he said, “We have gone very far to resolve this matter, we are making contacts and consultations and we are not here to blame anybody, but to resolve the problem”.

He added that the party will be back to power by 2019, saying, “PDP will never die, we are only on sabbatical and once the sabbatical is over, we are going to take over our leadership, we are going back in 2019”.

Commenting on the forthcoming Edo gubernatorial election and the process that will lead to selection of PDP standard bearer and how the party will meet INEC timetable, Jubrin said, “I want to assure that we are putting heads together with our lawyers, which will not last long, so be rest assured that everything will be in order”.
